Issue

Katakana characters don't show in custom panels on Linux.

Suggestions
Sun's website reports this as a known issue on Red Hat Linux 6.1. Sun has not tested on later versions of Linux so it's highly likely that the challenge persists. Apparently the lack of support is because the default installed Japanese TrueType fonts do not have Halfwidth Katakana glyphs (see Sun's Bug #4299902).

Also, note that Japanese characters cannot be displayed properly in TextArea and TextField when using "MonoSpaced-Bold" font style (#4309204). This problem can be corrected by changing a line in the font.properties.ja file. Please refer to the BugParade report for more details.
